Amides, tall-oil fatty, N-[3-(dimethylamino)propyl] is an amide, a compound in which the hydroxyl group of the carboxyl group in the carboxylic acid molecule is replaced by an amino group or a hydrocarbon amino group (-NHR or -NR2). Amides, tall-oil fatty, N-[3-(dimethylamino)propyl] can not only dissolve organic compounds, but also many inorganic compounds, it is a good solvent. Amides, tall-oil fatty, N-[3-(dimethylamino)propyl] has a mild amine odor. Contact with it may irritate skin, eyes and mucous membranes. Amides, tall-oil fatty, N-[3-(dimethylamino)propyl] is a fatty acid amidopropyl dimethylamine compound and its main function is to act as antistatic agent in cosmetic products. Amides, tall-oil fatty, N-[3-(dimethylamino)propyl] is manufactured by the amidation of fatty acids with 3,3- dimethylaminopropylamine (DMAPA) under alkaline or acidic conditions. It share an identical core structure containing two primary functional groups, a secondary amide and a tertiary amine, separated by a propyl chain. Different fatty acid chains are attached to the amide functional group. Despite the long fatty acid chain substituents, Amides, tall-oil fatty, N-[3-(dimethylamino)propyl] ia readily solubilised in water forming cationic ammonium salts.
Amides, tall-oil fatty, N-[3-(dimethylamino)propyl] has the following applications/functions:
1. Due to Amides, tall-oil fatty, N-[3-(dimethylamino)propyl]’s high polarity, both as free tertiary amines and as ammonium salts, it is a excellent dissipator of triboelectric charges (a type of contact electrification where materials become electrically charged after they are separated) even at low concentrations (e.g., 0.1 % w/w). This property enables Amides, tall-oil fatty, N-[3-(dimethylamino)propyl] to be used as antistatic and conditioning agents in cosmetic products.
2. Other uses of Amides, tall-oil fatty, N-[3-(dimethylamino)propyl] include functional surfactants, thickeners and bacteriostatic agents.
